Helen KellerThe LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid? ~ Psalm 27:1
Helen Keller was born on the 27th of June, 1880 in Tuscumbia Alabama. At a very young age, she suffered an illness that rendered her unable to see or hear. When Keller 7, Anne Sullivan came to her house to teach Keller words. This 'opened up her eyes' and she was taught that everything has a word. She learned to read Braille, how to understand words spelled into her hand, and eventually how to speak. As she got older she was sent to schools for the deaf/blind, and eventually she was accepted into Radcliffe College. In her spare time she liked to write, and this was shown to the world when she published her autobiography, 'The Story of My Life' in 1903. She wrote many other novels, and was also a lecturer and political activist. Religion was also a major influence in her life, and some of her books were about the subject. She died in 1968 at the age of 87, weeks shy of her 88th birthday. I find it very inspiring that, despite being both deaf and blind, she managed to share her story and views with the world. Some of her success is definitely attributed to her teacher and friend, Anne Sullivan, but her willpower and desire to gain knowledge certainly helped things. She was fearless, and managed to stand up against all odds. Helen Keller was most definitely a spirit-filled person. |
